‘We Cannot Compromise’ with Trump

Harvard President Alan Gerber said on Wednesday in “NBC Nightly News” that the school was suing the Trump administration because it would not compromise on retaining the $2.2 billion grant.

“What they show is that we want to directly review the people we hire from our faculty. That will affect what views we can express on campus. They also want to communicate who we need to fire.

Host Lester Holt said, “You’re taking on the most powerful man in the world.”

Gerber said, “We defend what I believe is one of the most important linchpins of our university, the American economy and way of life.”

Holt said, “How much pain can Harvard absorb here?”

Gerber said, “We don’t know how much we can actually absorb, but what we know is that we cannot compromise on basic principles like the defense of the right to revise.”

Holt said, “Is this a battle you can win?”

Gerber said. “I don’t know the answer to this question, but the interests are very high and there are no choice.”
