Highland Park, Illinois, shooter Robert Crimo III handed life sentence

The massive shooter who killed seven people during the July 4 parade in Highland Park, Illinois, was sentenced to life in prison Thursday without the possibility of parole, and the judge described him as “irreparably corrupted and beyond rehabilitation.”

Robert E. Crimyo III, 24, was given seven consecutive sentences for natural life in prison without the possibility of parole for first-degree murder, which he pleaded guilty last month.

“The court has no words that can adequately describe and capture the fear and pain that was inflicted on July 4th,” Lake County Judge Victoria Rossetti said he had announced the verdict.

She explained that Crimmy “completely ignores human life,” saying that “it’s been “defeated for free, never made mistakes, irreparably corrupted, and beyond rehabilitation.”

Crimyo refused to attend the sentencing hearing on Wednesday or Thursday, despite warnings that Rossetti’s previous warning would proceed without him.

The attack injured 48 other people.

Keely Roberts, whose 8-year-old son Cooper Roberts is paralyzed from his waist, told the court that Crimyo was “co-ill” after not attending the hearing of his sentence.

“You won’t listen to my sadness,” she said. “You’re irrelevant right now.”

Crimyo is said to have climbed the roof above the July 4th parade in downtown Highland Park, 30 miles north of Chicago, and fired at spectators with a legally purchased Smith & Wesson M&P 15 rifle.

The seven victims who died in the shooting are 63-year-old Jacki Sundheim. Nicolas Toledo Zaragoza, 78; Irina McCarthy and Kevin McCarthy (37), 35; Katherine Goldstein, 64; Steven Strauss, 88; Edward Uvald, 69.

Crimyo’s father, Robert Clint Jr., a former mayoral candidate, has been charged in connection with how his son obtained a gun license. He pleaded guilty in 2023 to counting seven misdemeanors of reckless conduct. He took less than two months in prison.
