In News Nation’s “Cuomo” broadcast on Thursday, Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA) said strengthening the “wide open” asylum law is something many Democrats don’t do on their own.
After Smith spoke about putting together a comprehensive deal, he said, “Asylum law is wide open and people have taken advantage of it.” asked host Chris Cuomo.[B]UT Why does it need to be such a compromise? Because the idea of making it all inclusive is a kind of rule. why? Why not tear it apart? Why not change the asylum standards and realize the reality that economic pain is not asylum, not under the amendments made by Reagan in 1980 for an international treaty, not by whose law? That’s why 90% of cases are lost. Why not fix it as standalone? ”
“I’m fine with that,” Smith said, “I’m fine with that. I’m sure many of my fellow Democrats won’t. And I wouldn’t relate to them. What they’re saying is that they’ll never address the issue of protecting an undocumented population. [Protected Status] -. ”
Cuomo then replied that Democrats didn’t do that when they controlled Congress and the White House under President Barack Obama, and Smith replied that there was no clear consensus in Congress.
