USC Commit Arigi Arena, the son of former NBA star Gilbert Arenas, was in his coma following a single-vehicle crash in the San Fernando Valley on Thursday morning, showing “signs of great progress in the last 24 hours.” A family statement given to ESPN.
18-year-old Arenas opened her eyes and was able to write on a piece of paper that reminded her of the smoke, asking, “Has anyone been injured?” His family said.
The arena remains intubated and with his family.
The family included in-person encounters from bystanders that helped remove the arena from the burning vehicle.
“I remember hearing him knock on the car window, but the smoke was so thick I couldn’t see anything. That was when I realized someone was inside,” the person said. “I tried to break the window, but I didn’t give it. Then I saw one of the windows was cracked enough and we used everything we needed to bend it and pull him out. The car was on fire.
The cause of the crash was not disclosed as of Friday.
The incident occurred before 5am on Thursday. According to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Tesla’s cybertruck was hit by a fire-torn wood/fire hydrant, and the driver was taken to hospital in serious condition, the LA Fire Department said.

Arenas, a security guard at Chatsworth High School in Los Angeles, played at the 48th McDonald’s All-American Game at the Barclays Center earlier this month.
He committed to the Trojan horse in January.
