Krishnamoorthi teases potential run for Durbin Senate seat

Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.) teased the announcement of a potential run to retire from his seat in an interview with CNN on Friday.

“I will be making an announcement about it at a later date, but today we are basically talking about Dick Durbin’s legacy and his service to Illinois.

He said Durbin “is coming down as one of our great senators,” and he said he “is grateful for his service.”

Pushing on the timing of his announcement and what it was, Krishnamoulti will have an announcement “soon” but he added that he is now talking about Durbin’s service.

Durbin announced Wednesday that he would not seek a sixth term in the Senate, paving the way for a hotly contested primary for his seat. Governor Juliana Stratton (D) has already announced that she will run for Durbin’s seat, and was supported by Illinois Governor JB Pretzker (D) on Friday.

Krishnamoorthi is also widely floating candidates who can take part in the race, along with Democrats from Illinois. Krishnamoorthi has a campaign bank account, particularly $19.4 million.

Anyone who wins the Democratic primary next year is considered a great favorite to win a seat in November.
