A federal judge on Friday determined that the Trump administration must restore legal status as an Ohio State graduate student arrested in the 2024 anti-Israel protests.
India’s Ahwal Sultan filed a civil suit in the DC District Court on April 15, claiming that after participating in a protest against Israeli military action, the F-1 student visa was “sudden and illegally terminated” by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after joining the protests against Israeli military action.
Sultan was arrested on April 25, 2024 in protest on campus, but his lawyers allege that his charges were dismissed and subsequently removed from his records.

International students sues Trump administrator and cancels their visa
A week after Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the State Department had revoked visas for hundreds of foreign students, the Sultan was told by OSU administrators that he no longer had an active legal position.
US District Judge Tanya Tyutan on Friday ruled that the Trump administration must immediately return the Sultan’s visa and cannot correct the records based solely on arrests in the protest, court documents said.

However, subsequent hearings will allow officials from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to explain the reasons for the status change and clarify whether they intend to begin removal procedures against him.
The lawsuit brought by the Sultan and students for Palestinian justice has appointed President Donald Trump, Attorney General Rubio, Attorney General Pamela Bondy, DHS Executive Director Christie Noem and Ice Director Todd Lyon.
The Sultan will join at least 12 Ohio students whose visas have recently been revoked.
