Fuel-sipping jet promises quieter, greener skies

Delta Air Lines We are partnering with Aerospace startup Jetzero to introduce innovative aircraft designs with the potential to change the future of commercial flight.

Called the Blend Wing Body (BWB) aircraft, this new design is dramatically different from the traditional tube and wing planes in use.

By combining the wings and fuselage into a single wide flat shape, the BWB reduces drag and weight, resulting in up to 50% improvement in fuel efficiency compared to today’s aircraft.

Operating towards net-zero emissions by 2050

Blend Wing Body (BWB) aircraft represent a key component of Delta’s strategy to decarbonize aviation with improved fuel efficiency that directly supports aviation’s 2050 net zero targets. By leveraging existing engine technology, this design avoids the delays associated with the development of new propulsion systems, allowing for faster adoption across the fleet.

The aircraft’s ability to transport over 250 passengers is consistent with the wide body model of the medium-sized international jets and seats in the range, and is positioned as a practical solution to reduce emissions without compromising operational needs. Its noise reduction engine placement and compatibility with current airport infrastructure addresses both environmental and logistics challenges, and integration with sustainable aviation fuels amplifies the role of cutting off life-cycle carbon emissions.

This multifaceted approach illustrates how innovative fuselage technology can accelerate the industry’s transition to cleaner travel.

The role of delta: Turning innovation into reality

Delta is deeply involved in the project beyond financial support. Through the Sustainable Skies Lab, airlines contribute their operational expertise to make BWB aircraft commercially viable. This includes advice on maintenance, airport operations, and other practical considerations needed for aircraft success in everyday airline services.

Delta’s Chief Sustainability Officer Amelia Delca highlights the importance of this collaboration, saying that working with Jetzero to develop new aircraft and passenger experiences is an essential step in advancing the aviation industry’s fuel saving and innovation goals.

Rethinking the passenger experience

The interior of the BWB aircraft has been thoughtfully redesigned to improve comfort and accessibility. The wider and flatter shape of the plane’s body allows for a new cabin layout. Delta aims to create a dedicated overhead bin space for all passengers, accessible seating and washrooms, and less crowded environments with fewer lines.

Additionally, the engine is mounted on top of the aircraft. This is expected to significantly reduce cabin noise and significantly reduce noise pollution around the airport.

Supported by industry and government support

The partnership received a significant grant from the US Air Force in 2023, and plans its first flight in 2027, reflecting strong government and industry support for the BWB concept, along with collaborations with aerospace leaders such as Northrop Grumman and scaled composites. Delta has been involved with Jetzero since 2021 and offers valuable guidance on how to bring this technology to the market.

The need for groundbreaking aviation technology

Over the past 50 years, the aviation industry has brought impressive benefits of fuel efficiency, improving by around 80% through innovations such as winglets and light materials. With Delta alone, in 2024, we saved over 40 million gallons of fuel by optimizing operations and upgrading our fleet. Still, the industry acknowledges that progressive improvements are insufficient to meet urgent climate targets. Technologies like BWB aircraft are needed to achieve the significant reductions in emissions and fuel consumption that the future requires.
