The Jets need speed and they may have reached to fill it up.
New Jets general manager Darren Moosy selected Georgia wide receiver Arian Smith in the fourth round on Saturday.
Smith is a speedster that can remove the top of your defense.
He ran a 40-yard dash in 4.36 seconds at the scouting combine.
However, Smith had 10 drops and 48 receptions last season. He was predicted as his seventh potential pick by some draft analysts.
Smith also has a long history of having three surgeries at university and a list of injuries including broken fibre, ruptured meniscus, broken wrists and high-grade sprain.
The Jets see players who can add dimensions to their attacks: speed is not enough.
“Elite Speed. He has an explosive element,” Moogie said. “When you have such a piece during an attack, it allows you to do more. Whether you’re getting rid of the top, taking a shot, speed sweep, quick smoke, elite speed or not.”
Mougey and coach Aaron Glenn admitted they would have to work in his hands after a drop issue in Georgia.
“One thing is that this player is very self-aware,” Glenn said. “It starts there. He knows he has to make it better. I went through this with Jameson Williams. When he entered the league, everyone talked about his drop. He actually worked tirelessly on it every day. If you’re self-aware and you understand that you have problems, you know you’ll get better.
The belief was that the Jets might take a quarterback at some point in this draft, but they ultimately didn’t choose it.
Mougey said he could sign an undrafted free agent quarterback.
“We’ve talked about a lot of quarterbacks throughout this draft and the process,” Mougey said. “After the draft, we know if we’ll deal with these undrafted free agents.”

They are signing Missouri QB Brady Cook.
Jordan Travis, the fifth pick a year ago, remains a mystery.
Travis recovered from a horrible leg injury he suffered in college last season in 2023.
Mougey declined to provide an update on Travis’s current status.

“I don’t talk about publicly medical players,” Moogie said.
The defensive tackle was another spot the Jets didn’t deal with in this draft.
Moosie said she believes in the players who signed free agency Jay Tufele, Derrick Nnadi and Byron Cowart to fill in the role next to Quinnen Williams.
“We feel good about the group,” Moogie said. “A lot of people in that room, a lot of people playing.
The Jets have acquired four players from the SEC and three players from the ACC. …The Jets are signing Missouri QB Brady Cook, which has not been drafted.
