Musk, Tesla board chair deny report that company is looking for a new CEO

Elon Musk and Tesla are pushing back reports that the company has begun searching for their next CEO, calling it “absolutely false” and “a very bad ethics violation.”

Wall Street Journal On Wednesday night, Tesla's board members contacted many executive search companies a month ago and reported that they had worked on a formal process to find a successor to Mask.

It took into consideration developments for those familiar with the debate, and pointed out that it happened because Tesla stocks had been sunk and some investors were irritated by the role of masks in the Ministry of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

According to the report, the board ultimately focused on one top search company. The Tesla board met Musk around that time and told him he needed to spend more on the company and say so much publicly – he didn't push back, the Wall Street Journal said, citing people familiar with the conference.

However, Robin Denholm, chairman of Tesla's board, wrote early on Thursday on X, “Tesla's CEO is Elon Musk, and the board is extremely confident in its ability to continue to execute with its exciting growth plans ahead.”

Musk herself said, “It is a very bad ethical violation that the WSJ intentionally publishes false articles and fails to include any clear denials by the Tesla Board in advance!”

“WSJ is discrediting journalism,” he added in a follow-up post. “Not all @WSJ stories are fake, but almost all mean and deceptive.”

The newspaper later updated the article, saying, “Tesla did not provide a statement before it was published.”

Last week, Tesla revealed in a revenue release that it generated $139.7 billion in car revenue in the first three months of 2025, down nearly 20% from the same period last year.
