This is the stain from Big Apple's new composting efforts.
The city has broken composting records for three consecutive weeks. The post learned even after the authorities fined them for their new mission.
In the fourth week of the new program, New Yorkers recycled 5.24 million pounds of food scrap, food production paper and garden waste, despite throwing compostable ingredients no longer being slapped on tickets.
It's 2,620 tons of garbage, and weighs equal to a 216 Rockefeller Christmas tree.
The stunning total marks the third consecutive week of record-breaking collections since the penalty was enacted and quickly reduced.
A health department spokesperson said in a statement that the program is reaching new heights because it is “simple, easy to use and understand.”
“New Yorkers want to compost – they just want it to be easy,” said Vice-Chair of Public Affairs, Joshua Goodman. “More sign-ups, special rules, another day… Free weekly regular service just like anything else.”
According to the agency, £5.2 million of recycled waste has risen more than 500% from what New York recycled last year.
This person has crushed a new record of composting. Composting was just set a week before £4.5 million. The composting fine was still valid for all residents of the five districts.
The mandatory program was enjoyed less than three weeks before city hall intervened and put a breach fine into the incinerator, causing widespread anger and confusion over the original guidelines.
Under the new rules, only buildings over 30 units will be fined for refusing to compost. Still, the fine is limited to $100.
Previously, all New Yorkers could be charged for throwing compost in a landfill, and the value of the penalty increased with each subsequent violation.
Nearly 2,000 citations were distributed that first week, and the first record-breaking pile of compost appeared the following week.
The program is so successful that the city has opened a third compost giveaway site in Queens. Queens will return 40 pound garden compost to New Yorkers for free.
