Filmmaker Joel Souza was attacked by a bullet that killed filmmaker Harina Hutchins on the set of “Rust” in a rare interview released Monday.
Sousa revealed his decision to move forward with filming after the onset tragedy, revealing that he has no connection with Alec Baldwin Rare interviews With the Guardian.

Sousa continued to separate herself from Baldwin, stating that she refused to watch the actor's reality TV show “Baldwins.”

He told Vanity Fair in August 2024 that he and the famous actor had no connections other than film. “It was tough to get through it. We got the performance I wanted. We're not friends. We're not enemies. We're not related,” he said at the time.
The director admitted to the Guardian that his decision to return to set after filming would be difficult. He attacked Hutchins and was injured by the same bullet he killed, and Baldwin's involuntary manslaughter charges were dismissed, but the situation was emotional for everyone involved.

Sousa explained the reason for his return.
“[Hutchins’ family] He told the Guardian.
“I was repelled by the idea of coming back, but now I've started pleading and I couldn't live with the idea that someone else was doing it,” Sousa said.

Cinematographer Bianca Klein took over filming, and the Hutchins was interrupted.
Hannah Gutierrez-Reed of Set Armorer has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after being found guilty of involuntary manslaughter.
