During a press conference Thursday morning, White House head Stephen Miller told Blaze News senior political editor Christopher Bedford that it was a “process” for Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent to develop a plan to deal with the ongoing trade war with China.
At this point, the US is imposes a 145% tariff on Chinese imports, and China is returning to and from US imports with a 125% tariff. As market uncertainty persists, Miller has reassured reporters that the administration is working towards a trade deal with China, which is beneficial to Americans.
“The Secretary of the Treasury is in the process of developing a plan to answer the questions you're talking about, and the President's goal was very clear about these points.”
“China is clearly a unique situation,” Miller told Bedford. “The President has spoken at length about what has happened economically since China entered the World Trade Organization, and the trillion dollars of trade deficits we built up with China during that era, what it means for national security, what it means for economic security, what it means for our supply.”
“Obviously, the Secretary of the Treasury is in the process of formulating a plan to answer the questions you're talking about, but the president's goal was very clear about these points,” added Miller.
Tariffs have been a source of criticism from political and media enemies, but Miller argues that the trade war will be resolved in a way that ultimately benefits the United States.
“[President Trump] “We will not allow China to continue stealing our intellectual property, to illegally dump and subsidize goods in the market, manipulate currency and acquire unsustainable trade deficits,” Miller said.
“We need to have a trade relationship with China that does not harm our country's economic and national security. It must be a guide for all purposes,” Miller added. “At the same time, tariffs will bring significant revenue to the country, allowing us to pursue dramatic plans for tax cuts and reform.”
