On Friday, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced its decisions 24 hours after the Football Association (FA) made a similar move. The ECB has now prohibited participation in women’s cricket at any level.
According to an update on transgender regulations, the ECB stated that participation in women and girls cricket is limited to those with a biological gender.
Moreover, the ECB indicated that “transgender women and girls” may still compete in an open, mixed category.
As noted by Breitbart News, this policy shift follows a ruling by the UK Supreme Court on April 15, which clarified that the legal definition of women is rooted in biological sex.
This ruling emphasizes that terms like “female” or “sex” are assigned at birth and aren’t simply based on gender identity.
Consequently, while only biologically born women can play in female cricket, transgender participants are excluded based on the premise that identifying as a woman does not grant automatic entry into women’s competitions.
The ECB articulated its reasoning, indicating alignment with the stance of the England FA.
In a statement, the ECB said, “Our recreational cricket regulations aim to keep the sport as inclusive as possible.” They added, “These included measures to address disparities, irrespective of gender, to ensure enjoyment for all players.”
They also noted, “Considering the new guidance we received tied to the Supreme Court’s ruling, we believe that the changes we’re announcing today are essential.”
