A group of 42 Democrats is urging the Pentagon’s inspector general to look into the influence of billionaire Elon Musk on the procurement process for the “Golden Dome” missile defense shield. This system is intended to aid President Trump in safeguarding the US against potential missile threats.
In a letter addressed to Pentagon officials, the lawmakers expressed concerns about whether the contract for the Golden Dome could be more about benefiting Musk and other wealthy individuals rather than providing effective defense solutions. This request comes after a report revealed that Musk’s company, SpaceX, along with partners Palantir and Anduril, has secured a significant contract to develop the Golden Dome. Notably, all three companies were founded by individuals who have politically supported Trump, with Musk contributing over $4 billion to the president’s campaign and currently serving as a special advisor.
The lawmakers described the situation as troubling, raising questions about the genuine intent behind these defense contracts. Senator Greg Casar from Texas, who is part of this initiative led by Senator Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts, highlighted the issue on social media, noting the significant financial investments Trump is planning in relation to the missile defense system and questioning Musk’s potential conflicts of interest.
An executive order signed by Trump on January 27 directed the Pentagon to create the Golden Dome, which involves developing a network of satellites and sensors aimed at identifying and neutralizing advanced missile threats.
The GOP-supported budget adjustment includes nearly $25 billion for projects that would also require contracts from companies like Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and Northrop Grumman, in addition to SpaceX. However, lawmakers are apprehensive about awarding contracts to SpaceX, given Musk’s close ties to the government.
Concerns have also been raised regarding a “subscription service” model for the Golden Dome, which could undermine standard procurement practices and allow Musk greater control over national security, as outlined in their letter.
The Golden Dome project is still in the early stages, and defense officials are working on providing options to Trump under his executive order. It remains uncertain if the Pentagon’s inspector general will investigate the procurement process. However, if it is determined that Musk has leveraged his government role to secure contracts for SpaceX, the lawmakers hope to escalate the matter to the Department of Justice for further inquiry.
