Trump’s budget has arrived; GOP defense advocates are dissatisfied.

On Friday, prominent defense hawks in Congress expressed strong discontent with President Trump’s budget proposal for 2026, highlighting concerns over its insufficiency in addressing rising threats from nations like China and Russia. House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-Ala.) voiced significant worries, stating that the budget doesn’t adequately reflect the current military landscape. He pointed out that the defense spending is at its lowest level relative to GDP since before World War II, which he deemed unsustainable given the prevailing threat environment. Rogers stated his intention to collaborate with the President and Senate allies to meet the necessary growth in military funding.

Former Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell criticized the budget, suggesting it perpetuates the “material neglect” of defense funding seen in the prior administration. He felt Trump had missed a key opportunity to secure robust funding for the military and noted that the proposed budget seemed to double down on this neglect amidst pressing national security challenges.

While the White House advocates for a 13% increase in defense spending to $1.01 trillion, critics on Capitol Hill argue that this proposal relies too heavily on reallocating $119 billion from expected funding adjustments. Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) was particularly vocal, calling the flat funding levels essentially a cut, as it comes after five years of unchanging military budgets under the Biden administration.

Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Susan Collins (R-Maine) also expressed serious objections to the suggested freeze on defense funds, emphasizing the pressing security challenges that the nation faces.

Overall, the discontent from various Republican leaders underscores the complexities and urgent discussions surrounding defense spending as the nation grapples with global security dynamics.
