AOC challenges border chief Homan to ‘come after me’ following DOJ referral warning

Queens, New York: Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York has signaled that she might escalate her conflict with Tom Homan, possibly referring him to the Department of Justice. This comes after her initiatives aimed at informing immigrants about how to navigate potential deportations.

During an event at Queens City Hall, Ocasio-Cortez expressed her determination, saying she isn’t intimidated by Homan’s hardline stance against her efforts. Earlier, Homan had raised concerns that her actions might be unlawful, claiming they could hinder Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in pursuing deportations initiated under the Trump administration.

“Tom Homan is suggesting that I should be reported to the DOJ for simply exercising my right to free speech to inform people of their constitutional rights,” she told the enthusiastic crowd.

Ocasio-Cortez argued that there’s nothing wrong with her actions, suggesting if there were legal violations, they could hold her accountable. In February, her office had conducted a webinar explaining to immigrants their rights when faced with deportation efforts. The guidance included advising individuals to request a warrant and how to identify different types of warrants that ICE might present.

This sparked Homan to assert that New York Democrats may be crossing legal boundaries, questioning, “What are the limits they should respect?” He emphasized that illegal entry into the U.S. is a crime that Ocasio-Cortez should acknowledge.

Ocasio-Cortez’s defense centered around the idea that educating people about their constitutional rights isn’t an illegal act. She also criticized the Trump administration’s immigration measures, characterizing the deportation of certain individuals from Venezuela as problematic incentives.

She stressed, “I don’t just refer to them as deportations. They often take place under curious circumstances.” Her advice was straightforward: if ICE agents come knocking, one should demand to see the warrant and, if it’s not provided, they should be told to return when they have one.

The auditorium was bustling, with some attendees unable to find seats and forced to wait outside. When addressing the crowd, she garnered significant support, although the event was momentarily disrupted. Protesters fervently challenged her regarding her stance on the situation in Gaza, making their sentiments quite clear.

“What are you doing about Gaza’s genocide?” one protester yelled, prompting a heated response from others present who shouted “Shame!” This created a chaotic scene, though Ocasio-Cortez continued her dialogue until security intervened to manage the situation.
