Dem Advocacy Relates ‘Somewhat Less’ to ‘Family Man’ Abrego Garcia and ‘More to the Process’

On Friday’s episode of CNN’s “Lead,” Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA) addressed the audio recording in which Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s wife seeks protection from him. Padilla explained that the focus of their advocacy is not solely on Garcia himself, but rather on ensuring a proper process is followed under the law for those seeking protection.

Jake Tapper, the host, mentioned that since Abrego Garcia’s deportation, more accounts of alleged abuse have surfaced, including audio from a 2020 court hearing where his wife appealed for protection. Despite the allegations, she has continued to support him. Tapper also raised the question of whether Democrats should advocate for Garcia’s return from El Salvador or if the circumstances are more complex than they initially appeared.

In response, Padilla remarked, “I appreciate the question, but whether it’s me, Senator Van Hollen (D-MD), or others, our advocacy tends to focus less on him individually and more on following the established process and looking at the facts.” He emphasized that it’s crucial to address any issues comprehensively, highlighting that the well-being of others involved is a major concern.

Padilla had previously referred to Abrego Garcia as a “family man, husband, father, and someone who has been engaged in the community for over 15 years,” calling him “Maryland’s father” in a statement made on April 9th.
