Sherri Papini claims she was ‘tortured’ in her first interview after going missing.

A California mother, Sheri Papini, who gained notoriety in 2016 for a staged kidnapping, has made her first comments since her story unraveled in a new documentary series. Once labeled as the “perfect wife,” Papini pleaded guilty in 2022 to charges related to fabricating her own kidnapping and has now opened up about that fateful time.

In the trailer for the documentary, titled “Sherri Papini: Caught in the Lie,” she poses a thought-provoking question: “Have you ever lied? And have you been blown up?” It’s a curious way to start, right? She recaps how she went missing for 22 days back then, claiming she faced torture and was chained up. “Everything is true. But I kept a secret from you,” she comments, which makes you wonder what the secret is.

Her family reported her disappearance on November 2, 2016, after she went for a jog in Redding, California. Concern grew when she didn’t pick up her child from daycare and her husband found her phone and headphones discarded on the roadside. Papini reappeared around Thanksgiving, claiming she was abducted by two Hispanic women and had several injuries—like a black eye and branding on her shoulder—that she said were inflicted during her ordeal.

Now, amid an ongoing custody battle with her ex-husband, Sheri Papini continues to face both scrutiny and legal challenges. After the kidnapping hoax was uncovered, she pleaded guilty to 35 counts of mail fraud and lying to federal investigators, ultimately receiving an 18-month prison sentence. One of the more shocking twists was that the DNA found during the investigation pointed back to her ex-boyfriend, which was a surprise, at least to many who followed the case.

The new documentary, which is set to air on May 26th and 27th, aims to give insight into her narrative from her perspective, tackling both her past claims and the fallout resulting from her guilty plea. It’s described as a detailed recounting of her experiences and the resulting investigations.

At 42, Papini faces not only the legal ramifications but also the task of repaying nearly $300,000 to various agencies involved in the case, which is quite a hefty sum. As she navigates her ongoing challenges, including parental rights over her two children, the public remains intrigued—some might say even fascinated—by her story.
