President Donald Trump is advocating for a 13% increase in defense spending for 2026, aiming to set the Pentagon budget at $1 trillion for the first time in U.S. history.
This so-called “Skinny Budget” highlights the administration’s main priorities, emphasizing the need to enhance safety, security, and sovereignty, particularly in relation to countering China’s ambitions in the Indo-Pacific. The proposal would uplift the defense budget from the $893 billion level previously approved for fiscal year 2025 to $1.01 trillion.
Key initiatives in the budget plan include boosting the production of Golden Dome missile defense systems, shipbuilding, and munitions, along with expanding deterrent strategies in the Pacific. These objectives align with a Republican-supported settlement package currently advancing through Congress.
Should this budget be enacted, the Navy is projected to gain the most, furthering its longstanding goal of expanding its fleet to address China’s maritime goals. Although smaller, the Space Force could also benefit significantly as the administration emphasizes the importance of maintaining space-based defense capabilities.
Both Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have expressed their commitment to surpassing the $1 trillion mark, indicating that decisive measures are necessary to reestablish U.S. military dominance.
However, as Congress holds the financial reins, the president’s proposal serves only as a preliminary outline; lawmakers will ultimately determine its feasibility.
