Elon Musk Secures Approval for His City in Starbase, Texas

In southern Texas, voters have decisively backed a measure to establish Texas Starbase as an independent city, giving Elon Musk a significant win.

Residents of the SpaceX Rocket Launch site and nearby communities have shown overwhelming support for this initiative, as indicated by the results released on the county election website. Additionally, the first elected officials of the new city were recognized, all of whom were either current or former SpaceX employees without any opposition.

The majority of the 1.45 square miles designated for the new city comprises SpaceX workers and their families who live in the area.

While incorporation doesn’t mean Musk can implement all his desired regulations, it does grant the company control over its own development pace. The city’s governing committee will oversee zoning, project construction, and various daily aspects of life.

Over the last seven years, SpaceX has transformed Boca Chica from a quiet retirement community into a bustling site for developing its advanced Starship rockets.

However, SpaceX has faced challenges providing housing for the hundreds of employees who wish to reside near the headquarters. Recent proposals for additional townhouses have been turned down by the county. Currently, about 260 employees live in a small community at the southern tip of Texas, bringing the total local population to nearly 500 when including their partners and families. Around 3,100 workers commute from Brownsville, the nearest city.

The area resembles a scene from a science fiction movie, adorned with cutting-edge manufacturing facilities, orderly rows of homes, and large bronze sculptures of Musk.
