Authorities reported that a vehicle crashed into the entrance of Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Sunday, leading to the deaths of two individuals and injuries to others. Among the victims were a man and a young girl, who local organizations say was four years old, though Transport Secretary Vivencio Hizon stated she was actually five.
The accident, described as a “vehicle incident,” occurred near Terminal 1, where the vehicle collided with a handrail outside the airport. Concern followed this tragic event, particularly as images circulated on social media. The airport’s operator, New Naia Infra Co., issued a plea for the public to refrain from speculation until verified updates could be provided.
Initial reports suggest that the black SUV was parked near the terminal entrance when the driver accidentally pressed the gas instead of the brakes. Four other individuals were treated for injuries and the driver was taken into police custody.
The Land Transport Office has suspended the driver’s license for 90 days pending an investigation. Local media showcased alarming photos of the scene, revealing multiple people on the ground and shattered glass scattered across the terminal entrance, with the front of the SUV visibly damaged.
Dozens of emergency personnel processed the area, while the airport operator confirmed that they are cooperating with authorities for a comprehensive investigation of the incident.
