Air taxi service intends to offer eVTOL rides from all three airports in New York City.

New York City might just see a transformation in its transportation landscape. Archer Aviation, in collaboration with United Airlines, is gearing up to introduce an air taxi service that could change the way people travel around the city.

Instead of fantasizing about flying cars, this initiative aims to provide an efficient and eco-friendly solution to bypass the city’s notorious traffic and arrive at your destination more swiftly.

Operational Overview of Air Taxi Services

United’s initiative plans to utilize existing helipads at East 34th Street, West 30th Street, and Lower Manhattan. From there, Archer’s all-electric aircraft, designed to accommodate four passengers plus a pilot, will connect with major airports like JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark, as well as regional hubs like Westchester County and Teterboro. The concept here is that travelers can book these air taxi rides as “add-ons” to their existing flight schedules, creating a seamless travel experience.

While specific pricing details are not yet available, it’s worth noting that a one-way helicopter trip from Manhattan to JFK usually costs around $265 per seat. As for when these Archer air taxis will officially take off in New York, that’s still uncertain. However, Archer plans for their aircraft to debut commercially in Los Angeles during the 2028 Olympics.

What’s Unique About Archer’s Aircraft

The Midnight aircraft is intriguing because, well, it’s all-electric and can fly up to 100 miles at speeds of 150 mph. It’s designed to take off and land vertically like a helicopter but transitions to horizontal flight akin to an airplane.

Boasting 12 engines and propellers, it prioritizes safety through redundancy and aims to meet the standards of commercial airliners. Compared to conventional helicopters, this aircraft stands out for its quiet operation and low emissions, making it an environmentally friendly option for urban air travel.

Infrastructure and Collaboration

To bring this vision to life, Archer plans to leverage existing aviation infrastructure and collaborate with partners like Atlantic Aviation, Signature Aviation, and Skyports/GroupEADP. In addition, the New York City Economic Development Corporation is partnering with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to ensure that the new services blend smoothly with the city’s transportation network.

Looking Ahead

Before passengers can book an Archer Air Taxi, the Midnight aircraft needs to secure type certification from the FAA, which means it has to meet certain design and safety standards. Archer has previously received certification for on-demand services, so they seem to be on the right track.

The Competition

It’s important to note that Archer isn’t the sole contender in the air taxi realm. Competing companies like Joby Aviation and Volocopter are also in the race to develop similar technologies. However, Archer stands out with significant partnerships, including a $1 billion contract with United Airlines, which positions them strongly in this evolving market.

The air taxi concept is exciting on many levels, but one might wonder about the comfort of trusting new tech to navigate the skies over one of the busiest cities worldwide. What do you think?
