On Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin remarked that there has been no necessity for nuclear weapons in the ongoing situation in Ukraine, expressing hope that this would remain the case.
In a preview of an upcoming interview with Russian state television shared on Telegram, he stated that Russia possesses the capability and resources to bring the conflict to “logical conclusions.”
When asked by a state television reporter about Ukrainian attacks in Russia, Putin responded, “We haven’t had to use these (nuclear) weapons…and I hope that need doesn’t arise.”
He further noted, “We have sufficient power and resources to achieve the conclusions that are needed from what started in 2022.”
In February 2022, Putin ordered a substantial deployment of Russian troops to Ukraine, labeling it a “special military operation” against its neighbor.
While the Russian forces faced setbacks in Kiev, they currently control around 20% of Ukraine, including significant portions of the south and east.
Recently, Putin has indicated a willingness to engage in negotiations, coinciding with former President Donald Trump’s call for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict.
The potential for nuclear escalation has been a concern for U.S. officials since the onset of the war in early 2022. Former CIA director William Burns emphasized that there is a credible risk of Russia resorting to nuclear weapons against Ukraine in the latter half of 2022.
