Trump Defends $45 Million Flag Day Parade
President Donald Trump has stood by the estimated $45 million cost for his planned Flag Day Army parade, referring to it as “peanuts” in light of the significance of celebrating American military strength and national pride.
During various interviews on NBC News’ Meet the Press on Sunday, Trump discussed his vision for a “big and beautiful” military parade in Washington, DC, to mark Flag Day.
“My birthday coincides with Flag Day,” Trump mentioned while speaking with host Kristen Welker at Mar-A-Lago. “I saw it on Flag Day; it’s not exactly my birthday…but we’re aiming for something special on June 14th.”
According to defense officials, the parade could indeed cost around $45 million. Trump stated, “It’s worth it. We have the greatest missiles, submarines, and tanks in the world. We’re going to celebrate that.”
The event is set to feature more than 6,600 soldiers, over 50 military aircraft, and around 150 military vehicles, including tanks and humvees. Supporters see this parade as a patriotic demonstration of the strength and legacy of the US military.
Additionally, Trump mentioned that the parade is part of a broader commemorative initiative he plans to lead this year. He proposed the creation of a national “Victory Day” to celebrate American victories in both World War I and World War II, inspired by discussions with France’s Emmanuel Macron.
“America played a crucial role in winning World War II,” Trump stated. “Why don’t we have a Victory Day? So we’re going to establish one for both World Wars.”
Trump clarified that he is not advocating for a new federal holiday. “This doesn’t mean we disregard our job or existing national holidays,” he added. “Ultimately, our country will be a holiday for all citizens.”
When prompted for further details, Trump returned to the theme of Flag Day, emphasizing the parade as the highlight of this year’s patriotic celebrations.
