All horses that participated in the 151st Kentucky Derby held in Louisville, Kentucky, this past Saturday reportedly trace their lineage back to one remarkable American champion.
It seems that they all share a connection to Secretariat, the horse that set the record for the fastest miles and quarter in Derby history back in 1973. According to a report from the Louisville Courier Journal, this revelation emerged on Saturday.
When looking at the ancestry of most horses over six generations, the report indicated that they descend from champions like Secretariat and Northern Dancer.
Trainer Whit Beckman commented, “It’s one of those statistics. Sooner or later, it’s going to come up regarding how prominently he appears in the pedigrees of these horses. It’s really fascinating. Truly fascinating.”
Secretariat was the first thoroughbred in 25 years to win the Triple Crown back in 1973, as noted on the website:
In 1974, Secretariat was honored with induction into the National Racing Museum and Hall of Fame. By 1999, he was recognized as one of the 50 greatest athletes of the century by ESPN, and he became the first thoroughbred to have a US postage stamp issued in his name. A statue of Secretariat stands outside the paddock at Belmont Park, with both of his front legs raised.

As reported on History.com, following his Triple Crown win, Secretariat sired nearly 600 foals, including over 40 stakes winners, but he remained unique in many respects.

On Sunday, a social media post shared a stunning image of Sovereign celebrating his triumph:
One social media user exclaimed, “He put in an incredible performance. He deserves all the recognition.” Another person responded to this, saying, “What an amazing race with such beautiful horses.”
