Knicks’ depth challenge facing a significant test against Celtics’ reserves

BOSTON – The Knicks bench seemed like a potential weakness in the first round against the Pistons.

Now, they’re up against some of the best bench players in the league.

The Celtics not only have a strong starting five but also a bench that offers little relief for the Knicks.

Payton Pritchard, recognized as the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year, is a key player.

“He had a fantastic season for them,” coach Tom Thibodeau commented after a recent Knicks practice. “Sam Hauser really contributed as well. Luke Cornett provided some solid minutes too. The challenge really is about how they spread the floor; they often have five shooters on at once.”

Pritchard averaged 14.3 points per game during the regular season, shooting 47.2% from the field and 40.7% from beyond the arc, while also logging 28.4 minutes per game.

However, in the playoffs, his playing time has decreased to 26.8 minutes per game, with an average of 9.2 points on 51.6% shooting and an impressive 50.0% from three-point range.

The Knicks’ lack of depth was a recurring issue during the regular season, which became even more apparent as Miles McBride struggled in the first round.

He only managed to score 3.8 points per game with a dismal 26.3% shooting from three and overall just 26.7% from the field.

It’s crucial for him to step up, especially when competing against Pritchard when both teams engage their benches.

It might give the Celtics a significant edge.

“It’s not about any single individual; it’s about how the collective unit performs,” Thibodeau said regarding McBride. “Our benches have been effective all season—it’s about moving the momentum back and forth between them.”

One bright spot for the Knicks in the first round was Mitchell Robinson. His defensive skills may prove vital, especially with the Celtics often showcasing shooters like Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford.

Robinson had some defensive struggles during the regular season against the Celtics, particularly with pick-and-roll situations.

He’s not necessarily the fastest to guard Porzingis and Horford beyond the three-point line.

Robinson tends to be more effective inside.

He was primarily active in the final matchup against the Celtics in the regular season, which was their closest contest—a 119-117 loss in overtime.

“Mitch provides us with rim protection and versatility,” Thibodeau noted. “His ability to rebound, especially on the offensive end, and switch in pick-and-roll situations is crucial. He adds that dimension for us.”
