Scottie Scheffler matches PGA Tour record with victory

Scotty Schaeffler Dominates at CJ Cup Byron Nelson

Scotty Schaeffler appeared incredibly relaxed at the TPC Craig Ranch during the CJ Cup Byron Nelson this week. His play was nothing short of remarkable.

Schaeffler finished the tournament at 31 under par, securing victory with another impressive 8-under 63, matching his Friday score. He actually wrapped up at 32 under after sinking birdie putts on the 18th hole. This places him alongside Justin Thomas (2017) and Rudig Åberg (2023), as only three players to have enjoyed such a lengthy stay at the top.

Despite a commanding lead of ten shots at one point, Schaeffler faced some tension, almost missing a critical putt for par—yet he ultimately claimed the win, walking away with $1,782,000. His eight-shot lead marked the largest victory margin in the tournament’s history.

A notable achievement, Schaeffler is the first Dallas Regional High School alum to win since 2007. He kicked off the event with a scorching 10-under 61 on Thursday, followed by a 63 on Friday and a 66 on Saturday, setting him up comfortably for the final round.

Behind Schaeffler, Eric Van Louen finished at 23 under, Sam Stevens at 20 under, and fellow Dallasite Jordan Spieth at 19 under.

Reflecting on his triumph, Schaeffler shared, “This tournament means a lot to me. It’s my first start as a professional. I was caddying for my sister 11 years ago. It feels like a culmination of lifelong efforts.” He made his professional debut with Byron Nelson back in 2014 at the age of 17.

While this might not be a major victory for the world’s top golfer, it certainly sets the stage well as he prepares for his next big event, the PGA Championship in North Carolina. There, he’ll be hopeful to finally capture the title, with his best finish so far being tied for second in 2023.

Schaeffler is focused on lifting the trophy this time, especially after a challenging past year that included an unforgettable incident at Valhalla Golf Club. This week’s performance at home proves he’s ready to take on the competition.
