County cricket fourth day: Somerset against Essex, Hampshire versus Durham, Middlesex facing Kent, and others | County Championship

Sunday Summary

In a surprising turn of events, despite the impressive appearances of Joe Root and Harry Brook in one game, Yorkshire faced a five-wicket defeat against Warwickshire over the course of two and a half days at Headingley. Joe Root’s score of 90 stood out as the highest in the match. However, Warwickshire managed to chase down the target of 185 with relative ease, clinching the win with a six hit by debutant Zen Malik. It wasn’t just the loss but also a points deduction for a slow over rate that made this summer’s second defeat for Yorkshire feel even worse. Division One, it seems, is proving to be quite a challenge for them.

Meanwhile, in a match at Taunton, Essex’s Jordan Cox, picked for the England squad heading to Zimbabwe, had to retire hurt after straining his side while diving to avoid a run-out when he was at 99. He had been selected for a tour to New Zealand last year, but a broken finger kept him from participating. Thankfully, James Rew provided some inspiration for Somerset in that game.

Over at Leicestershire, Josh Hull made quite an impact, dismantling Northamptonshire’s top order. His efforts led to Leicestershire achieving their third victory this season, firmly establishing them at the top of Division Two. Facing a target of 289, the Northants batsmen crumbled quickly, with Hull sending the stumps flying for three of their top players in just his first four overs, ultimately bowing out for 156 runs.

Meanwhile, Ollie Price stepped up in a big way at Old Trafford, stepping into the shoes of legends Wally Hammond and Charlie Barnett, becoming only the third batter for Gloucestershire to score a double century against Lancashire. His remarkable unbeaten score of 253 featured some lovely cover drives and crisp pulls that kept the fielders on alert. Price’s 203-run partnership with Miles Hammond (who hit 97) was a highlight of the day. However, an off-field incident occurred when Tom Bailey received a warning from the ECB’s anti-corruption officer after accidentally taking a mobile phone onto the field, leading to an internal investigation by Lancashire.

In other news, Daniel Bell Drummond’s impressive 223 helped Kent secure a strong standing at Lord’s. On a different note, Ben Brown achieved his first century as Hampshire captain in Southampton, while Derbyshire managed to avoid the follow-on at Sophia Gardens, leaving Glamorgan wobbling at a precarious 15 for three.
