Political Tensions Between Carville and Hogg
Veteran political strategist James Carville recently shifted his opinion about David Hogg, the vice-chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Initially, Carville referred to Hogg as a “twerp,” expressing disdain for his approach, particularly regarding a push for a significant House Democrat in a solidly Democratic district.
This conflict ignited when Hogg’s personal group announced plans to target Democrats for not doing enough to oppose Donald Trump’s administration. Carville, alongside other Democrats, voiced frustration at the possibility of DNC officials engaging in the primary process. While technically allowed, critics argue it breaches trust within the party.
Initially, Carville’s reaction on “NewsNation” labeled Hogg as a “lightweight.” However, after a heated discussion moderated by Tara Palmieri, the two met again, leading to a notable dialogue.
In response to Hogg’s primary strategy, Carville said, “I think it’s outrageous for a party official to raise funds against members of the same party.” There remains ambiguity regarding Hogg’s future in the DNC.
Post-discussion, Hogg seemed to persuade Carville a bit. Carville later compared Hogg’s determination to Abraham Lincoln’s support for Ulysses Grant, stating, “This guy will fight,” emphasizing Hogg’s tenacity.
Despite accolades from Carville, questions linger about Hogg’s role within the DNC. As the party prepares to revisit its rules in upcoming summer meetings, it may restrict officials from participating in primary elections, even in personal capacities. Hogg also faces criticisms from a former candidate who previously lost the vice-chair election.
Karin Free, a Native American lawyer, argues that Hogg’s election violated DNC bylaws related to fairness and gender diversity. Hogg’s team contends that the elections were in line with then-current rules and that altering them post-facto is inappropriate.
