Analysts Discuss Democrats’ Missed Opportunities Against Trump
Political analysts Mark Halperin, former Democratic strategist Dan Trenne, and former White House press secretary Sean Spicer have pointed out that Democrats are not capitalizing on recent comments from President Donald Trump regarding child dolls and tariffs.
During a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Trump stated that children end up receiving two dolls instead of 30, with customs duties in China causing costs to rise. He reiterated these remarks in various interviews. Halperin, Trenne, and Spicer suggested that Democrats should leverage what they consider to be poor rhetoric from the president.
“I think Democrats are being held back. The media is taking up the fight, while Democrats aren’t effectively pushing back,” Spicer noted.
Halperin remarked that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer shouldn’t be engaging in events with small business owners. Trenne also mentioned that had Democrats made similar remarks about Trump, it could have potentially gone viral, dominating the headlines.
“It’s remarkable how ineffective Democrats are at conveying their messages right now. The leadership seems questionable,” Spicer added. “This should be an easy opportunity for press conferences where they could really capitalize. But, they’ll likely respond five days too late.”
Recent polling indicates that many Americans are dissatisfied with Trump’s handling of the economy. For instance, a Reuters/Ipsos survey released on April 23 showed that only 37% approved of his economic management.
Halperin pointed out that he hasn’t heard any Democrats publicly address Trump’s comments. Currently, the U.S. has a 145% tariff on Chinese goods, and recent reports suggest that China’s economy is contracting.
New export orders from China have reportedly fallen to their lowest level since the COVID-19 lockdowns in December 2022, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Treasury Secretary Scott Becher stated on a recent program that 17 trading partners have been in negotiations with the Trump administration following the imposition of global tariffs. Meanwhile, China is pursuing trade deals with other nations as a counter to Trump’s tariff policies, reaching out to countries like Vietnam, Malaysia, and various European nations.
Additionally, the Association of China, Japan, South Korea, and ASEAN released a statement opposing “the escalation of trade protectionism.”
