Jake Tapper Questions Stephen A. Smith on His Qualifications for President

After a period of speculation regarding the president’s potential run, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith has begun facing tough questions about his eligibility for the presidency.

In a CNN interview with Jake Tapper on *State of the Union* this past Sunday, Tapper questioned Smith’s qualifications for the highest office in American politics.

“Last month, you mentioned that there are others who are clearly more suited to be president than you,” Tapper noted. “What do you say to those who point out individuals lacking political or foreign policy experience? You’re a respected sports commentator.”

Smith provided a lengthy response but ultimately acknowledged that he isn’t eligible for the position.

“I’m not ready,” he stated. “I’m not qualified. I have no political background whatsoever. Politics was never something I was interested in.”

Nonetheless, he noted that, given the current landscape of American politics, he might still offer a better option than many others.

“Look at our political situation,” Smith remarked. “How bad can it really be? And, Jake, I know you do your job every day—if you’re the one elected, you realize that your real work starts with the campaign.”

While expressing confidence in his possible political aspirations, he made it clear that serious engagement in politics could lead to success.

“If I really applied myself and decided to enter politics, do I think I could win?” Smith mused. “You bet!”

“But it’s not just because I’m the most qualified. It’s more about how I feel the current politicians serve the interests of the American people.”
