The Atlanta Dream has just signed one of the top prospects for the 2025 WNBA Draft without any cost.

After being released by the Golden State Valkyries on Saturday, Shyanne’s path took a turn as she was picked up by the Atlanta Dream. This decision came just two days after it was announced that she had been cut from training camp, only a few days before the first preseason game. She was the 17th overall pick in this year’s draft, a surprising drop from predicted first-round status to the second round.

The Valkyries’ choice to let her go has sparked considerable criticism online. Despite being a top prospect from the 2025 draft, speculation regarding her health emerged, as fans tried to decipher the reasons behind her release. She had dealt with a knee injury while playing for Maryland but had been cleared to play prior to the draft.

Over the weekend, Golden State’s head coach, Natalie Nakaze, commented on the situation, stating that her decisions were guided more by conformity than sheer talent.

Now, Shyanne heads to Atlanta, where the Dream are looking to solidify their roster. They signed her within 48 hours of her being let go by the Valkyries, effectively taking on her entire rookie contract rather than bringing her on as a free agent, hence the term “granted from exemption.”

That said, her spot on the roster in Atlanta isn’t guaranteed. The Dream currently have six protected veterans and two newcomers secured under contract, meaning that eight of the 12 roster slots are already filled by players like Britney Grinner and Alisha Gray, among others. This leaves three or four positions open for competition. Among the contenders for these spots are three rookie draft picks, including Shyanne, one returning player, and another signing from training camp. Being the standout draft pick gives her a fighting chance.

Interestingly, Atlanta had the 18th pick in the draft and had initially aimed for Shyanne, who was taken 17th. Instead, they selected Te Hina Paopao at 18, but now have Shyanne on their roster.

The Atlanta Dream is set to take on the Washington Mystics on Wednesday, May 7th.
