Sen. Reuben Gallego (D-AZ) is advocating for pardons for millions of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. in light of President Donald Trump’s newly introduced self-reporting program.
On Monday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) unveiled a program that provides $1,000 scholarships to undocumented immigrants who can prove they voluntarily reported their status using the CBP Home Mobile App.
According to Breitbart News, similar self-reporting initiatives in European countries like Germany, Denmark, and Sweden have successfully decreased illegal immigration.
In reaction, Gallego has criticized the self-reporting approach and suggested an amnesty plan that would allow undocumented immigrants to obtain renewable work visas indefinitely.
“Why make them pay a $5K fine, undergo background checks, and receive temporary work visas when they can renew them with good conduct?” Gallego posted on X.
Despite increasing support for his views, Democrats remain opposed to deportation, even for the most serious criminal offenders.
A recent CBS News poll indicated that a majority of American adults (56%) back the Trump administration’s objective of locating, detaining, and deporting undocumented immigrants.
Additionally, an Echelon Insights survey revealed strong support for Trump’s deportation stance among key swing voters.
“The swing voters we need to win over are being hindered by Democratic opposition to the deportation of gang members, drug traffickers, and human traffickers,” wrote research author Jeremy Carl on X. [among reachable swing voters] It’s more popular than ever.
