Trump halts millions of dollars in federal research funding for Harvard.

Trump Administration Cuts Federal Research Grants to Harvard

On Monday, the Trump administration declared it would halt all new federal research grants to Harvard University, marking an ongoing dispute between President Trump and the institution.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon criticized the university in a sharply worded letter addressed to the president of Harvard. The letter highlights concerns over what McMahon described as an “embarrassing” mathematics program for students and ongoing plagiarism incidents involving some of the faculty.

She stated, “Taxpayer funds are privileges, and Harvard is unable to meet the basic conditions necessary to access that privilege.” Furthermore, she accused Harvard of failing to uphold its legal obligations and responsibilities related to transparency and academic integrity, suggesting that the university has disregarded the integrity of higher education in the country.

Adding to the tension, Harvard has taken legal action against the administration, claiming that the federal funding was withdrawn due to unfounded accusations regarding the university’s handling of Palestinian protests. The lawsuit contends that the government has failed to substantiate its claims about anti-Semitism or any connection to research intended to advance public health and safety.

Previously, Trump’s spokesman had expressed the view that Harvard did not merit federal funding. “Federal subsidies to institutions like Harvard primarily benefit bureaucrats who are overcompensated while everyday American families struggle,” spokesman Harrison Fields said.

As reported, federal funds constituted roughly 11% of Harvard’s revenue in 2024, equating to about $687 million. This financial hit could significantly affect the university’s research efforts moving forward.
