Yankees Update: Volpe Returns and Promotions in the Minor Leagues
Aaron Boone felt a sense of relief on Monday as he reinstated Anthony Volpe in the Yankees lineup.
The shortstop sat out Sunday’s game due to a left shoulder issue after he felt a “pop” while trying to make a diving play in Saturday’s match. However, he was cleared by medical staff to play in the 4-3 loss against the Padres.
“I spoke with him while heading home on Sunday. He mentioned he felt good all night,” Boone shared pre-game. “It seems we’ve avoided something major there.”
Although Boone intended to monitor Volpe’s shoulder throughout the game, he noted that the resilient 24-year-old was “completely strong.”
In the game, Volpe went 0-for-3, making a sacrifice fly.
Prior to promoting top prospect George Lombard Jr. to Double-A Somerset on Sunday, the team considered having him start the season in High-A Hudson Valley instead. However, following a strong performance in High-A, he earned his way up to Double-A.
“We’re really excited about George,” Boone expressed. “He definitely took the next step to Somerset. I’m thrilled about his progress—he’s an impressive athlete with exceptional potential.”
Lombard, showing notable growth, had an impressive .329 batting average with a .983 OPS in 24 games at High-A this season. The 6-foot-2 shortstop also played third and second base.
“He’s got a strong mindset,” Boone mentioned. “He truly loves the game and has a solid work ethic. It’s been amazing to see how he’s developed physically over the last two years.”
DJ LeMahieu, who’s dealing with calf tightness, could potentially rejoin the Yankees during their upcoming West Coast trip, which kicks off against Anaheim on Friday. Boone indicated that LeMahieu would continue his rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday.
Originally, he was supposed to play both second and third base upon his return. However, Jazz Chisholm Jr. is expected to be sidelined for 4-6 weeks due to oblique tension, thus focusing on second base.
A scout from the American League who observed LeMahieu during his stint in Double-A Somerset commented that he “takes a good batting spot,” although he noted defensively, he wasn’t much of a challenge.
On another note, Marcus Stroman, recovering from a knee issue, threw another bullpen session on Monday. Boone mentioned that if Stroman bounces back well, he might start participating in live batting practice later this week. The Yankees could certainly benefit from a healthy Stroman, particularly with Carlos Carrasco and Jordan Montgomery struggling in the rotation.
Lastly, Giancarlo Stanton, who has been dealing with a tennis elbow, participated in running and agility drills in the outfield prior to Monday’s game, continuing his rehabilitation process.
