Washington:

US House Speaker Mike Johnson has emphasized that the United States will do everything necessary to assist India in combating terrorism, describing India as a “very important” ally for the US.

During a congressional briefing on Monday, Johnson discussed the ongoing India-US trade agreement, expressing optimism for upcoming negotiations between the two nations.

“I believe India plays a significant role in various ways, and I genuinely sympathize with what’s happening there,” he stated, highlighting the importance of trade talks between the two countries.

“We’ll make every effort to support these initiatives, and as this relationship progresses, it becomes increasingly evident how vital it is. The Trump administration certainly recognizes this partnership and understands the threats posed by terrorism, especially if they escalate.”

This commitment follows a recent terrorist attack in Jammu and Pahargam, Kashmir, which resulted in 26 fatalities and numerous injuries. The Trump administration has shown its backing for India amid this crisis.

On April 30, Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed US dedication to collaborating with India against terrorism during his conversation with Foreign Minister Jaishankar.

Rubio expressed sorrow over the tragic loss of life in the Pahargam attacks and urged India to engage with Pakistan to alleviate tensions and foster peace in South Asia, according to US Bureau spokesperson Tammy Bruce.

In her statement, Bruce noted, “Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Foreign Minister Subramanyam Jaishankar today, expressing his condolences for the lives lost in the recent terrorist attacks and reiterated the US’s commitment to work alongside India.”

On April 23, US President Donald Trump reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to express his condolences for the attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, firmly condemning the violence and pledging full support for India in ensuring justice against those responsible.

In a statement on X, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal mentioned that Trump conveyed his deepest sympathies to Modi regarding the loss of life resulting from these attacks, highlighting the severity and impact on the region.
