Senator John Fetterman (D-Pa.) seems to be losing some of the support he had, particularly with a recent focus on his health among liberals. A lengthy piece from New York Magazine, titled “All by by himself,” was released recently, discussing how Fetterman claims to be “healthy” after suffering a significant stroke in May 2022.
Initially celebrated by progressives, Fetterman has also attracted attention from moderates and conservatives for his practical approach to various issues. However, his strong backing of Israel following the October 7 Hamas attacks has drawn criticism from both the left and right, even causing some dissent within his own team.
Critics from the conservative side have labeled the New York Magazine article as a “hit piece,” claiming that it highlights Fetterman’s support for Israel and reveals why the liberal faction has moved away from him after previously rallying around him in mid-2022.
Fetterman is facing scrutiny regarding his health, personal life, and online controversies.
Kate Swisher, a technology journalist and podcast host, has publicly defended Fetterman in light of the serious implications of his stroke. She expressed frustration with the way a reporter from NBC News portrayed him. Swisher tweeted about her lengthy conversation with Fetterman, calling criticisms of him “nonsense.”
Interestingly, Swisher had a different tone when discussing Ben Terris, the author of the New York Magazine report. She acknowledged his piece as sad but fair, citing the importance of medicine and self-care in recovery from a stroke. Reflecting on Fetterman’s political abilities, she described it as painful to read how they have shifted.
Media has questioned Fetterman’s mental fitness following an interview, prompting a rush to defend him from liberals.
Colleague Rebecca Traister also shared her insights. While acknowledging concerns, she previously praised Fetterman’s transparency about his health, which she noted contrasts sharply with certain political narratives. In a prior interview, she claimed his cognitive abilities are intact.
Others, like Mehdi Hasan, criticized the situation, citing comments from Fetterman’s former Chief of Staff suggesting he is unfit for Senate duties. Hasan pushed for other Senate Democrats to take note of the report and call into question his capabilities.
There have been mixed reactions regarding whether someone with severe mental health challenges should hold a high-ranking position like that of a senator. Liberal writer Jill Filipovich praised the New York Magazine article, mentioning that not everyone is suited for every job, particularly those facing serious mental health issues.
Comments from various activists and news figures illustrated a split perception regarding Fetterman’s fitness for office. Some have pushed a narrative suggesting his health remains an ongoing concern, while others defend his abilities, even insisting that with enough recovery, he could be a significant political figure in the future.
