Political analyst and former Fox News personality Bill O’Reilly recently remarked that President Trump lacks a “strategy” during a discussion around doll pricing amid increasing economic uncertainty.
“There’s no strategy. Donald Trump isn’t a calculated speaker,” O’Reilly said, as reported by Leland Vittert from NewsNation. “He doesn’t consult anyone when he speaks. He just says what he feels like saying.”
“Do wealthy individuals just say whatever? Well, he’s been part of that group since he was a kid, so he speaks his mind,” he added, adopting a measured tone.
O’Reilly’s comments followed Trump’s recent claim that families might hesitate to have children due to escalating costs linked to his new tariffs and that he’s worried about these concerns.
“Factories are struggling with business. They’re raking in profits—[former President] Biden…sells us stuff,” Trump said last Wednesday, referencing China’s economy.
“People say, ‘Oh, shelves will be stocked.’ Well, maybe kids will have just two dolls instead of thirty, and those two dolls might cost a bit more than usual,” he continued. “But we aren’t just sorting out the essentials. We have stuff we don’t need; even if it’s not a lot, we’re filled with unnecessary items, and a fair deal is what we need.”
White House advisor Stephen Miller echoed these sentiments last week, hinting that Americans might be willing to pay more for domestically produced dolls. His allies believe that sudden tariffs could incentivize local production and investments.
The president’s trade actions in the early months of his second term shook global markets, heightening tensions with traditional trading partners like Canada and the European Union, raising concerns about a potential recession.
However, Trump seems to have adjusted his economic narrative, implying that Americans may need to spend more and consume less in this unpredictable economic climate.
Later in the interview, O’Reilly suggested that Trump’s statements carried significance.
“There’s a deeper meaning behind the doll comments,” O’Reilly told Vittert. “He wants Americans to make some sacrifices to weaken China’s economic stance.”
