Dr. Umar Johnson Speaks on Carmelo Anthony Incident
Dr. Umar Johnson, a well-known black activist and psychologist, recently discussed the situation involving Carmelo Anthony, labeling it as a “Carmelo Anthony Grift.” This commentary came during an episode of The Art of Dialogue, where Johnson focused on Anthony as the sole target of his critique.
In the conversation, Johnson described Hunter, a football player, noting that he is significantly heavier than Anthony, yet he seemed to lack his usual demeanor that day. Johnson emphasized that Hunter was accompanied by his brother Austin, who is also similar in size.
He asserted that Anthony, who he referred to as a “160-pound black boy,” was in a precarious situation against what he termed “two racist Texas white boys,” both much larger than him. Johnson maintained that Anthony had every right to defend himself.
Johnson claimed he received messages from individuals who witnessed the incident, reporting that both brothers attempted to confront Anthony. He noted, “In Texas, you have the right to stand your ground,” stating that if someone feels their life is in danger, they have the right to protect themselves, even to the point of using lethal force.
Regarding the presence of a knife, Johnson pointed out that Anthony was reported to have one at a school event, justifying it with a quip about being a “black Texas.” He questioned why it would be unusual for him to carry a knife.
Initially, Jason Whitlock expressed a rather stark viewpoint on the situation, describing it as “cold-blooded murder,” indicating that it stemmed from an overreaction to verbal clashes. However, he noted that the unity displayed by supporters of both sides suggested the incident might ignite greater racial tensions.
Whitlock mentioned Johnson’s involvement as part of a broader narrative, contemplating the possibility that Johnson’s information might not reflect the whole truth. With the advent of cell phone footage, it was implied that soon there might be clarity surrounding the incident.
Whitlock also referenced Dominique Alexander from the Next Generation Action Network, who claimed there was video proof of the events that transpired. He speculated that such footage would likely present a one-sided version that would not favor Anthony’s supporters.
He warned that this could resemble previous situations that ignited widespread unrest, suggesting that the release of this video might provoke a similar response as seen during incidents like the George Floyd case.
Whitlock expressed concern that the media portrayal might incite white individuals against the black community, framing the situation as a quest for racial harmony being undermined.
The discussion highlighted Johnson’s remarks as part of an ongoing narrative surrounding the incident, pointing out broader implications for racial dynamics in America.
