“In the U.S., sporadic human infections without known contact with infected animals indicate the potential for the virus to adapt for efficient human-to-human transmission,” they noted. “Meanwhile, the virus persists in wild birds, backyard flocks, and migratory species, increasing the risk to humans and domesticated animals.”
This week, the European Commission announced a procurement deal with CSL Seqirus. This will give 17 countries the chance to purchase up to 27,403,200 doses of pandemic flu vaccine if a pandemic is declared by the World Health Organization or the European Union.
Interestingly, rates of flu vaccination are increasing among Black and Hispanic adults, while rural white adults are seeing a decline. Hmmm.
Overall, from 2019 to 2022, influenza vaccination rates for older adults rose slightly by 0.7 percentage points, from 76.3% to 77.0%. While rates remained stable for White and Asian adults, Black and Hispanic adults, especially in rural areas, showed notable increases in vaccination.
Black adults’ vaccination rates increased by 7.0 percentage points and Hispanic adults by 8.2 percentage points. In contrast, rural White adults experienced a 2 percentage point decrease during the same period.
