Attempted Assassination of Trump: A Look Back

What do you envision when you think about the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, who was then a presidential candidate, in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, 2024? Often, it’s the image of Trump emerging from a group of security personnel, blood on his face, defiantly raising his fist—almost a rallying cry of “fight, fight.”

A poignant photograph taken by Evan Vucci of the Associated Press captures this chaotic moment, and it earned the 2025 Pulitzer Prize, although not in the traditional news category. Instead, the Pulitzer Committee awarded Doug Mills from The New York Times for a series of images related to assassination attempts, highlighting one of Trump just before a bullet grazed his ear.

This particular photograph serves as a stark reminder of the precariousness of our political landscape. Senator Ted Cruz remarked on social media how fortunate the nation is to have a “fighter” like Trump at the helm.

Mills’ photos showcase a significant moment; they reveal the threat Trump narrowly evaded through a timely turn of his head. Yet, Vucci’s images, rich in symbolism, vividly portray a man who stands unyielding even after such a perilous encounter.

From a compositional angle, Vucci’s work stands out. The dynamic arrangement features Trump rising amidst his team, creating a visual triangle in contrast with the security personnel who are bending low. The American flag, prominently featured, adds a powerful backdrop. In contrast, Mills’ photograph is more static, marred by the chaotic elements in the foreground and lacking the flag. While some might argue that Mills produced superior photographs, it raises questions about the committee’s choice to overlook Vucci’s compelling imagery.

Could it be possible that the committee, comprised of journalists from well-known outlets like Reuters and The Washington Post, simply missed the visual representation of Trump and his supporters’ triumph? Speculation abounds, but that notion seems far from irrational.
