On Tuesday’s episode of Fox News Channel’s “Ingraham Angle,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that U.S. and Chinese officials will meet this weekend to discuss trade. He mentioned, “We agreed on what to talk about for Saturday and Sunday.”
Bessent explained, “[W]E had no negotiations…China was the missing piece in the discussions with the world focused on the U.S. I had planned to go to Switzerland for negotiations, but the Chinese team is also there. So, we will meet this weekend.”
He said, “I believe what’s going to happen in Switzerland is that we’ve agreed to have discussions over the weekend.”
Bessent emphasized that the U.S. strategy depends on the president’s decisions. Ultimately, the president is prepared to impose measures on all countries if negotiations fail, such as non-tariff trade barriers and currency manipulation.
He also noted that Trump’s remarks reflect “strategic uncertainty…which could unsettle the market” if there isn’t a deal. However, he questioned the lack of information, stating that both he and President Trump are aware of what actions they can take, although they do not disclose the details.
