Whoopi Goldberg Critiques Trump’s Hollywood Tariff Plan on “The View”
During a recent episode of “The View,” actress Whoopi Goldberg criticized President Donald Trump’s plans related to Hollywood tariffs. She suggested that the financial burden of filming in California has led many to take their projects elsewhere, pointing out that she often shoots in Canada instead.
Goldberg expressed her frustration, saying, “If it were possible to film in Europe, you’d be able to teach the story I want to tell. If my book comes out and you want to cover it, then you would have to collaborate with me on how to write it.” She also noted the impracticalities of filming in certain locations, mentioning that significant projects like “The Passion of the Christ” couldn’t be made in Texas and likening that to shooting “Gladiator” in Rome.
On Monday, Trump announced his approval of plans involving the Commerce Department and U.S. trade representatives to support the film industry.
John Voight, an actor and advisor to Trump, along with Special Advisor Stephen Paul, presented a detailed proposal to the president aimed at revitalizing the film and television sectors. They discussed necessary changes for various entities in the industry, including unions and studios.
Goldberg extended her critiques, denouncing the administration’s intentions and emphasizing concerns about limitations. “The essential point here is the need for tax incentives. To make real change, we must enact reforms at the state level. We shouldn’t be restricted to shooting abroad,” she explained. “Film can teach people about America, even those who may never visit.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom reacted positively to Trump’s proposals on social media, indicating a willingness to bring more film projects back to the state. He asserted, “California is the cornerstone of the film industry, and we’re eager to increase work that’s done locally. There’s a chance for effective national incentives, and now is the time to partner for a resurgence in American film.”
