Half of Britons Would Not Defend Their Country ‘In Any Situation’

There’s a sense that the British government, its citizens, and their way of life are not what they used to be—at least not worth defending as much as before.

A recent Ipsos survey released in 1945, coinciding with Europe’s Victory Day—a day marking the surrender of Nazi Germany—indicates that about 48% of British citizens would not fight for their country “under no circumstances.”

On the other hand, only 35% expressed a willingness to rearrange their lives to defend the UK, while 17% were uncertain, as reported.

There’s a notable gender gap: 49% of men said they would take up arms, compared to just 21% of women.

Political views seem to play a role too, with anti-Brexit liberals showing less readiness to protect the nation. In contrast, supporters of Nigel Farage’s Reform British Party tend to be more inclined to make sacrifices for their country.

Age is another factor. Among those aged 18 to 34, 42% would be likely to enlist, while only 28% of those aged 35 to 54 would do the same.

Reflecting on this decline in patriotism, Richard Gill, a veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, remarked that many not wanting to fight is a symptom of a broader national issue. He noted, “We’ve moved away from teaching pride in our country, its history, and its value.”

He added, “A nation that lacks confidence in itself can’t expect its people to safeguard it. This has to change.”

In recent years, the British military has faced criticism for adopting certain ideologies that seem to negatively impact recruitment efforts.

Notably, in 2023, the military was advised to stop recruiting “useless white male pilots” to boost participation from black, Asian, and other minority groups, despite the UK’s predominantly white population.

Furthermore, the number of British soldiers has decreased significantly, reaching its lowest total since the Napoleonic Wars in the early 1800s.

Interestingly, British patriotism seems to be slightly stronger than German patriotism, as a survey from last year found that six out of ten Germans would not take up arms to defend their country.
