Vance addresses the Munich Leaders Meeting on resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Vance Discusses Path to Peace in Ukraine Conflict

WASHINGTON – Vice President JD Vance commented that while Russia is seeking concessions from Ukraine to resolve their ongoing conflict, he believes there’s a feasible path toward peace that both nations might explore.

“What we aim for is to encourage both the Russians and Ukrainians to establish some basic guidelines for dialogue,” Vance mentioned during the Munich leadership conference held in Washington on Wednesday.

He added, “If reason prevails, I think it could lead to a sustainable peace, which would benefit both Ukrainians and Russians economically.”

During the discussion, Vance shared the stage with Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger, who is the chairman of the Foundation Council for the Munich Security Conference and a former German ambassador to the U.S.

Vance urged European nations to boost their defense budgets, enhance European independence, and encouraged NATO allies to increase military funding aligned with the Trump administration’s “America First” policy.

This event followed Ischinger’s recent proposal on establishing a peacekeeping force in Ukraine to address the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv, which he warned could imply “the de facto end of NATO.”

According to Ischinger, if Britain and France were to deploy peacekeeping troops without American involvement, it could lead Russia to blame Ukraine for the escalated tensions, which he expressed in a Politico interview released Monday.

Vance reiterated that his “America-First” approach will have broader implications and convey a strong message, particularly in regions like Greenland.

In discussing potential interventions, Ischinger suggested that it may ultimately place Ukrainian Europeans in harm’s way, highlighting the delicate balance of international involvement in the region.

Vance had earlier spoken at the Munich Security Conference in February, emphasizing that Europe needs to significantly enhance its defense capabilities.

He also noted that the real threats to European countries stem not just from external actors like Russia and China, but also from “internal threats,” such as censorship and illegal immigration.

European leaders have contested Vance’s views, with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius addressing the comparisons made between certain European situations and conditions found in authoritarian regimes.
