Vance Blasts Russia’s Demands To Conclude Ukraine Conflict: ‘They’re Asking For Too Much’

Vice President JD Vance Critiques Russia’s Stance in Ukraine Conflict

On Wednesday, May 7, 2025, Vice President JD Vance expressed criticism toward Russia, suggesting that President Vladimir Putin demands “too much” regarding the ongoing war with Ukraine.

During a discussion at the Munich Security Conference, Vance remarked, “I’m not saying that Russians are not interested in leading this to a resolution. What I say is, now Russians are looking for a specific set of requirements, a specific set of concessions to end the conflict. I think they are asking for too much.”

The Trump administration has shown frustration over what they see as Russia’s hesitance to negotiate a peace deal. Vance’s remarks are seen as significant, given the political landscape since the administration’s arrival in January. He noted that Trump’s stance on the European conflict is driven by a notion of “strategic realism,” attempting to grasp the origins of the dispute.

While Vance mentioned that he appreciated Ukraine’s willingness to agree to a 30-day ceasefire, he believes such a deal is currently unattainable, indicating that Russia seems uninterested in honoring any agreement.

He emphasized, “I think it’s probably impossible to mediate this entirely without at least direct negotiations between the two, so that’s what we’re focusing on.”

On potential next steps, Vance hopes to establish “the basic guidelines for sitting and talking to each other” between Russia and Ukraine.

There’s an ongoing effort to facilitate dialogue, as Trump envoy Steve Witkov has spoken with Putin multiple times, and retired General Keith Kellogg has engaged with Ukraine. Additionally, officials from both nations have interacted with U.S. representatives in Saudi Arabia, although they have not met face-to-face.

Throughout these discussions, Russia has been firm in its stance against NATO’s influence on Ukraine, while Ukraine, led by President Volodymyr Zelensky, is insistent on securing guarantees from Western nations to prevent future aggression from Russia.

This time, Vance adopted a more balanced approach, asserting that the U.S. and Europe are “on the same civilization team,” but also warned that changes are needed.

He stated, “Frankly, we all on both sides of the Atlantic have become a little more comfortable with the security posture of the past 20 years.”
