Cease-Fire in Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated that the longstanding conflict with Ukraine might finally be winding down, noting a temporary cease-fire has been established between the two nations.

“I think the problem is coming to an end,” Putin mentioned during a press conference regarding the situation in Ukraine.

The conflict, which has spanned over four years, began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2024.

Former President Donald Trump has stated since his re-election in January 2025 that he seeks to bring an end to the war, asserting that if he had been in office earlier, the conflict likely wouldn’t have started. On Friday, it was announced that a temporary cease-fire was set to coincide with Russia’s annual Victory Day, which honors the Soviet Union’s triumph over Nazi Germany during World War II.

“I am pleased to announce that there will be a three-day ceasefire on May 9th, 10th, and 11th,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding, “the celebration in Russia is Victory Day, and it’s the same in Ukraine because World War II played a significant role for both countries.”

Though this cease-fire is expected to be brief, Trump expressed hope for an eventual resolution between the neighboring countries.

“Hopefully this is the beginning of the end of what has been a very long, deadly, and hard-fought war,” he stated, noting that discussions to conclude this major conflict, the largest since World War II, are progressing.

Estimating wartime casualties is complicated, but the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) recently reported that from the start of the war until December 2025, the Russian military suffered around 1.2 million casualties, accounting for dead, wounded, or missing personnel. These figures are claimed to surpass any major conflict since World War II. The same report estimates Ukrainian casualties to be between 500,000 and 600,000, with fatalities estimated between 100,000 and 140,000.

“At current rates of decline, combined casualties in Russia and Ukraine could reach 2 million by spring 2026,” noted CSIS.

Putin offered no further details during his remarks, but the Kremlin previously indicated that it expects European governments to take action, holding them accountable for severing communications post-invasion.

These comments by the Russian president came after reports indicated that the Victory Day parade was notably reduced, suggesting that the ongoing conflict has left its mark even on Moscow.
