President Donald Trump has reportedly directed US intelligence leaders to ramp up their efforts to investigate the Greenland independence movement from Denmark. This comes amid discussions about the possibility of Greenland becoming a part of the United States.
The Wall Street Journal first reported that Trump has ordered US intelligence agents to employ both covert and electronic methods to identify supporters in Denmark and Greenland for the administration’s aims.
Agencies such as the CIA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, and the National Security Agency have received a message emphasizing the need to collect intelligence pertaining to Greenland. This directive comes from officials under the Director of National Intelligence, Tarsi Gabbard.
Since Trump took office, advisors have indicated that 57,000 residents of Greenland could potentially vote for independence from Denmark and then enter into a free association with the United States.
Moreover, if Greenland transitions from Danish governance to the US, it might gain defensive support and other advantages. Gabbard has acknowledged the information shared by the WSJ, but also expressed a commitment to identify the source of the leak.
“We should be ashamed if we support individuals who leak sensitive information and undermine the president,” Gabbard stated. “Those who disclose classified material will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. I’ve referred three illegal leaks to the Department of Justice for prosecution.”
Trump has consistently maintained that acquiring Greenland is vital for enhancing global security. He highlighted that the island hosts a US military base essential for monitoring potential Russian missile activities, in addition to being strategically located along crucial North Atlantic shipping routes.
Vice President JD Vance visited Greenland in March, expressing disappointment at Denmark’s lack of investment in the territory it administers.
“The message to Denmark is clear: We’re not doing enough for the people of Greenland,” Vance remarked. “You’re not investing in the community, and you’ve neglected this incredibly beautiful land, which is home to remarkable people.”
