Contentious Hearing on Transgender Participation in Sports
During a recent hearing held by the subcommittee on Government Efficiency, Chairwoman Marjorie Taylor Greene criticized New Mexico Rep. Melanie Stansbury after she declined to engage. The hearing was titled “Unfair Play: Protecting Men from Women’s Sports.” Stansbury took the opportunity to advocate for transgender rights and pressed Fatimagos Graves, CEO of the National Women’s Law Center, on the issue of excluding transgender athletes. Greene, however, interrupted her, declaring that Stansbury’s time had run out.
As Stansbury attempted to speak further, Greene noted, “Gentlemen’s time will expire,” and redirected the discussion to another representative. Stansbury countered, asserting that Greene had talked for over a minute, to which Greene responded that the Democrats were wasting time. “You took a minute to waste my time on unordered points,” Greene remarked.
Throughout the hearing, Greene repeatedly struck her gavel and asserted her authority to maintain order. She called upon Rep. Lisa McClain of Michigan to continue with the proceedings.
In February, President Donald Trump issued an executive order aimed at ensuring women and girls can compete fairly in sports, linking federal funding to educational programs that do not allow biological men to participate in women’s events. Polls indicate a significant portion of the public supports this exclusion, while many Democrats and various organizations have opposed these measures.
Recently, USA Fencing disqualified Stephanie Turner after she refused to compete against biological men. According to USA Fencing, the disqualification was strictly due to her choice to avoid eligible opponents, in line with international regulations.
In light of backlash following Turner’s disqualification, USA Fencing is reportedly preparing to revise its gender eligibility policy. This comes on the heels of an announcement from Education Secretary Linda McMahon regarding an investigation into the matter.
