Emma Raducanu advances to the second round of the Italian Open after defeating Maya Joint.

After a chaotic night in Rome, Emma Raducanu managed to fend off a spirited challenge from a young competitor, moving on to the second round of The Italian Open. She won the match with scores of 7-5, 6-7 (1), and 6-3 against Australia’s Maya Joint.

This marks Raducanu’s first victory in Rome after her previous appearance in 2022 ended with a first-round retirement against Bianca Andreescu. Next up for her is a matchup against the 21st seed, Ekaterina Alexandrova.

“It was definitely a hard-fought match,” Raducanu reflected. “Maya played extremely well, and I think I held my ground too. The level of play was really impressive overall, and she’s climbing the rankings quickly, which speaks to her game.”

It was a night that could have been quite stressful for the 2021 US Open champion as she initially led 7-5, 5-3, before Joint made a notable comeback. Raducanu took a bathroom break before the final set, and returned with an aggressive mindset, quickly establishing a lead of 5-0 in the third set. She faced a breakpoint at 5-3 but managed to regain her composure. Despite the numerous shifts in momentum throughout the match, Raducanu maintained her determination and confidence until the end.

Having only experienced one full clay season in her career, Raducanu is still adjusting her game to this unique surface. While she has enjoyed a few good wins, her recent loss to a skilled clay player highlighted her ongoing challenges with movement on the clay.

“It’s not just about the clay, but I gained a lot of confidence,” she remarked. “It was a heavy night, and while I felt good with the new balls, the old ones were cold. Still, I’m proud of my performance—not just because I won, but because I felt I was committed to each shot.”

This match involved one of three teenagers currently ranked within the WTA Top 100. Raducanu has made a remarkable climb of 606 spots since her launch in 2024 and is now positioned at 78th overall. The 19-year-old successfully reached the main draw in Rome after two strong qualifying matches this week.

Raducanu had hoped to work with her ad hoc coach Mark Petchey, but logistical issues prevented his presence. Instead, her only supporter during the match was Jane O’Donoghue.

Later, Raducanu jokingly mentioned, “I think Petchey was keeping an eye on my match, so I hope he was happy with how I played.”

In other matches, Cameron Norrie capitalized on his opportunity in Rome, progressing to the second round with a solid win against Australia’s Christopher O’Connell, finishing 6-3, 6-2.

Ranked 91st in the world, Norrie is on a journey to rebuild after a tough 18 months. He made it into the main draw as a lucky loser after initially losing in the final round of the qualifiers. Now, he’s set to face the 10th seed, Daniil Medvedev.

Unfortunately, Katie Boulter faced defeat, losing to former French Open runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova with a score of 6-3, 6-3.
